The idea-expression dichotomy is among the trickiest concepts to nail down in copyright law, but it is also one of the most important to understand for creators looking to protect their work.  So, we had our resident Storyteller, Jonathan Downing, take a stab at explaining this often-misunderstood doctrine with some recent examples of its application from across the country.  While it is resistant to bright-line rules, and while no two situations will be exactly the same, we hope that our latest article helps illuminate some of the key concepts and pitfalls of this foundational legal doctrine.
