Interns Help Drive Innovation at Tyz Law Group with AI-Powered Legal Tech

At Tyz Law Group, a Northern California-based IP litigation boutique, this summer has been all about innovation—and the driving force behind it? A pair of talented engineering interns who are helping shape the future of legal technology.

Working alongside attorneys and a senior engineer, the interns, Lachlan Kelly and Evan Marriott, played a central role in building and releasing the initial version of the Firm’s artificial intelligence litigation tool.  From designing the RAG system and user interface, building prompts to refining workflows and enhancing features, their hands-on contributions are powering a platform that serves as a litigator thought partner, and streamlines legal tasks like document analysis and work product draft generation.

“This project has been a deep dive into making AI usable,” said Evan Marriott, a sophomore studying computer science at UC San Diego. “From building the UI and API to designing RAG-based workflows, it’s been exciting to contribute to something that saves attorneys valuable time.” Lachlan Kelly, a sophomore in electrical engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, echoed the sentiment: “I’ve gone from reading about retrieval-augmented generation to building a full multi-agent RAG system from scratch. It’s been incredible to see our ideas turn into a working tool that attorneys can actually use.”

The interns have been embedded in every stage of the project, contributing to both the technical and strategic aspects of the platform.  Their involvement reflects Tyz Law Group’s commitment to mentorship, professional development, and integrating fresh perspectives into its client service model.

“Our interns aren’t just observing—they’re building,” said Ryan Tyz, the firm’s founder. “Their work is helping us leverage AI to enhance strategic legal thinking and work product execution. It’s a win for our clients and a meaningful experience for the next generation of engineers.  We are committed to building a best-in-class AI tool to improve our practice.”

By placing interns at the heart of its innovation efforts, Tyz Law Group is not only advancing its technological capabilities but also investing in the future of legal-tech talent.
